The Story

Demy Karalis was born into a working-class family in communist Bulgaria. In her early childhood, she began drawing, as is common for children, using colored pencils and watercolors. Her creativity extended beyond drawing; she also enjoyed knitting and embroidery. During the difficult years of communism and the several years following its fall, Demy knitted her own clothes. As she grew up, so did her love for art, but in communist Bulgaria, the dreams and opportunities for factory workers’ children were very limited. Factory workers' children were expected to follow the same path and not pursue art. Therefore, drawing remained just a hobby for Demy for many years. She enrolled in a glass industry school, where she discovered beauty of glass, crystal, and glass art After school, she worked in a glass factory for six years. During the financial crisis, as Bulgaria attempted to transition to a free-market economy, Demy like many others, was forced to seek a better future in Greece. In 1997, she found herself confronting the challenges every immigrant faces, namely language barriers, employment, and finding a place to live. However, after a little while, she was able to return to her passion for art. Demy needed more formal education, so in 2008, she in the Art Department of the College of Athens, where she learned to use acrylics, which she still incorporates into her paintings today. The interaction with other artists was very positive and helped her learn new techniques. The history of ancient Greece, the lifestyle in modern Greece, and the majestic nature of the country all had a distinct influence on her art. In 2012, she met her husband and migrated once again, this time to Phoenix, Arizona, in the USA. Two years later, Demy started painting again, but this time on wood. 2016, DemArts was born with a single goal: to share a small piece her heart with every household through her decorative art. She focuses on art wall clocks, small paintings, and wooden decorative signs. Every piece she creates is one of a kind. In 2020, Demy accidentally became “infected with the virus” of silk. A friend asked her to paint a bluebonnet scarf, and with a single touch of the brush to the silk, she fell in love with this medium, which she still works under the name “Demy Karalis.”

In 2025, Demy began a Mastery Program to further enhance her skills and artistic knowledge. This program allowed her to explore new techniques and deepen her understanding of various art forms. She was excited to take her work to the next level and expand her creative horizons. With each new lesson, she continued to evolve as an artist, bringing fresh inspiration to her art.
